Substance Abuse Treatment Can Help To Prolong Life

It is well-known that drugs such as crystal meth can ruin lives, but that does not stop people from taking it. What many people do not know is the physical damage it can do. For those who are addicted, substance abuse treatment is the best way to prevent further physical deterioration. The damage done to the body depends on the exact drug type taken, the amount, and the duration of the abuse. So what kind of damage does drug addiction do to the body?

Certain drugs have different effects. For instance, cannabis is known to have an effect on the mind, especially if it is used over a long period of time. The longer the use, the more likely the person will become more paranoid. This means that those who take weed for a long time are more susceptible to mental illness later in life.

One organ that can be damaged through drug use is the liver. One of the functions of this organ is to filter toxins out of the blood, and this includes things like drugs and alcohol. It works as one of the best filtration systems, but it does have its limits. When they are exceeded, then damage is caused. This makes it function less efficiently, and so toxins build up in the body, which damage other organs.

Another organ that can be damaged through drug abuse is the heart. Many of the illegal drugs will cause the heart to beat either erratically, or at a high speed. Over time, this puts a lot of stress on the heart, and it can lead to permanent damage. This is why cardiac arrest is common in long term abusers. The best way to stay healthy is to not take illegal drugs at all. However, for those who are addicted, then treatment must be sought.

Opium Addiction Treatment

Opium is derived from the opium poppy. This plant contains both morphine and codeine which are highly addictive prescription only pain medications. One of the most insidious uses of Opium is to further refine it into heroin, one of the deadliest and most addictive drugs on the planet.

Other drugs derived from the opium plant include codeine, Demerol, hydrocodone, methadone, morphine, Lorcet, Oxycontin, Vicodin, and Vicoprofen. Collectively these drugs are refereed to as opiods or opiates.

Heroin aside, possibly the most dangerous thing about these drugs is how commonly they are prescribed for pain management purposes. This has led to an opiod addiction crisis across most of the world where otherwise law abiding citizens are being turned into addicts without ever realizing it. The danger of these drugs, oxycontin for example, is that a person who starts out using it for legitimate purposes will find themselves addicted to it without ever realizing it. Oftentimes the pain of an injury being treated with the drug is mistaken for pain caused by withdrawal after the underlying cause has been healed.

Opium, Opiates and Opioids

Treatment of opium, heroin and other opiates is rather difficult because it requires careful and methodical drug management. The danger of these drugs is that the body will have an extreme reaction to being taken off of them cold turkey. This reaction could lead to heart failure and death.

A typical treatment regimen will be too replace the opiod with something that is legal and less intense. For example a heroin user might be prescribed oxycontin. Then they will slowly be weened off the drug, or transitioned into even less addictive versions of it. This is a very slow treatment process, but one that is necessary. There are both in-patient and out-patient clinics available to help with the treatment of opium addiction.

This is fun for some people, but sometimes even though the person is experienced they can have what is known as a bad trip. This is when you get full of anxiety and just don't want anything but to come down off of the drug as soon as possible. The best thing to do if this happens to you is to either get to a hospital to have them help you come down, or just try to relax until it's over.

LSD is something that you don't want to take all that often. It can start to make you feel like you're high all the time even when you're not if you get used to it. You may start to develop psychological problems if you use it too much and have things in your brain that aren't equipped to deal with this sort of chemical being there. This drug can be abused too much and you'll change into someone that's always having to fight off hallucination which can get very hard to deal with.

Once you can admit that you have a problem with LSD you can start to get the help you need. This isn't going to be too easy when you first get started, but in the end it's good for your mind and your body.

What One Should Know About Rehab For People On Heroin

If you're dealing with a heroin problem, you're going to need to get help. One way to do this would be to check into a rehab center. This can help you to quit and you can get help to quit through this.

When you figure out you have a problem, you're probably going to feel pretty low about that. That's okay, you need to feel your feelings out and try to figure out just what it is that's making you use. It's probably something in your life that's hard to deal with. This is where rehab can really help out. It allows you to get away for a while so that you can work on yourself and not worry about all of your troubles. You can take those on once you get sober, and it will be a lot easier for you to do.

You may need some medication to help you get off of heroin, and that's something that a rehab center is prepared to help you with. You're going to be pretty uncomfortable for a while when you first quit, and you need to be sure you get comfortable and are ready for this. It's not going to feel good at all, but you can make sure you get help from the staff at a rehab facility to help you feel a little better. Be careful with any medications they give you and only take them as directed to be safe.

You may think that you can just wait to get into rehab because you'll just use one more time and think about it later. This is not a good way to think about these kinds of things. You need to take care of this right away because if you don't you may end up dead or in jail. This is the time to take your life in the right direction and choose to stop using. You need help because this is one of the hardest drugs to get off of, and you'll have to really try hard to kick this habit.

You can research various rehab facilities if you need to so that you can figure out which one meets your needs the most. You can contact them and ask about what they have to offer before you go there so that you can feel safe and secure about your choice to go with that facility. Make sure you ask about what they can do to help you get off of the drug, and then what they'll do to help you get your life back together. You can do this, just accept the help they are offering.

Once you realize you have a problem and try to go through a rehab center, you can use this advice to help you figure out what to do. Take your time with this and you'll be sure to get over this addiction even though it is very tough to do so.

Understanding Barbiturates And What They Do

There are certain drugs known as sedative hypnotic drugs, or more commonly referred to as depressants. They are able to slow a person down, specifically in their cerebral activities, providing similar effects to alcohol. Both alcohol and barbiturates can be abused by people that become addicted to the way that they make them feel. Substance abuse can be a life-threatening problem, and there are ways to get help for those that are addicted to barbiturates today.

Different Types Of Barbiturates

There are many different types of barbiturates including Amytal, Nembutal, and Seconal. Another popular one is phenobarbital, known for its highly sedated abilities. By taking these drugs on a regular basis, you can develop a drug tolerance for them. Your body will adapt to them, and soon you will need more of them to achieve the same effect. If you try to get off of them, you will go through withdrawals which can be very painful and lingering. You will have to get help from professionals to fully free yourself from barbiturates if you have been taking them for quite some time.

Reasons People Use Barbiturates

In most cases, people will take barbiturates in order to get a high, in the same way that people that drink alcohol do when they get drunk. It is easy to overdose with these types of drugs, which can lead to physical problems, mental issues, or placing yourself in a coma. It is possible that you may also affect your respiratory system which can slow your breathing down. If you take too much of them, it may lead to death as your respiratory system ceases to function. Now that you know who barbiturates do, you should try to avoid them if at all possible to prevent addiction and substance abuse from these potentially lethal drugs.

The Dangers of Benzodiapines

Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs which includes such drugs as Xanax, Ativan and Valium. These drugs can be effective for short term use treating anxiety, panic attacks, and sleep issues.  In some instances may be used to prevent seizures in addicts or alcoholics who are going through withdrawal during treatment. Because this class of drugs can be quite addictive, most doctors are hesitant to prescribe them for long term use. The issues that Benzodiazepines treat can often be better treated with therapy or other treatments.

The true dangers of anxiety drugs or sleeping pills are when they are used long term. The user may begin taking more than the recommended dose or take them at times when they should not. The user may become overly relaxed, less alert and  less inhibited. Because these drugs are hypnotics, they can even cause an altered state or blackout. During a blackout, the user will be up and around, doing activities such as driving, working or even unusual activities and then have no recollection of those actions later. Because their senses are dulled, they are a danger to themselves and especially others because they do not properly perceive risks.

Benzodiazepines are especially dangerous when mixed with other drugs. The user may build a tolerance which requires larger doses that are no longer therapeutic or under a doctor’s approval. The user may turn to risky and illegal mean to obtain them or may begin mixing drugs which can cause deadly combined drug toxicity. Many drug deaths lately have been attributed to “combined drug toxicity” which is the combined effects of multiple drugs. Even though none of the drugs alone are at a lethal level, the combination of them can be quite deadly.

Because Benzodiazepines can cause a severe physical dependence, it is best to taper down the dosage when trying to get off of them.  Quitting cold turkey can cause seizures, tremors, nausea and other unpleasant effects.

Recognizing The Signs Of Alcohol Abuse

There are clear signs to look for when you are observing someone that is abusing alcohol on a regular basis. Those that use alcohol will have mannerisms, and physical changes in their body, which will be easily recognizable as someone that is using too much alcohol every day. Problems associated with this condition are health issues such as corrosion of the liver which can happen if alcohol is consumed too much. They may also have bad habits such as driving under the influence, putting themselves and other people in danger. If you notice that they are looking flushed more than not, and are slurring their words when they speak, these are all signs of alcohol abuse, and this person should get help right away.

Dealing With Alcoholism And Alcoholics

If you have a friend that is definitely an alcoholic, they need to get help as soon as possible. If the signs of alcohol abuse are obvious, finding and alcohol abuse treatment center is the best thing you can do for them. Although you can be supportive, it's usually not enough to get people to wise up about this bad habit. You can find treatment centers in most large cities, and even rural communities, that can help these individuals get back on track. By looking for the signs and symptoms of alcoholism, you will be one step closer to helping your friend if they are truly an alcoholic.

Best Medications For Getting A Good Night Sleep

Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Have you been thinking about talking with your physician about getting a prescription for a sleeping medication? There are many sleeping medications on the market today that have been proven to provide people with the ability to sleep on a regular basis. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of prescriptions available which include Ambien, Sonata, Lunesta and many others that have been proven to produce results. In this article, we will discuss which ones are the best, as well as how you can avoid an addiction to sleeping pills once you start taking them.

Sleeping Medications That Work

Falling asleep is a problematic situation for many people around the world. They may have too much on their mind, or it could be that the environment that they are in is not conducive to a good night sleep. Sleep is very important, and is part of maintaining your health. If you can't get enough sleep every day, it can impair your immune system, and your cognitive functionality throughout the day. That's why it's important to use sleeping meds that your doctor can prescribe that can help you get the rest that you deserve.

Avoiding Addictions To Sleeping Pills

If you're having trouble sleeping, and you continually take sleeping pills on regular basis, you can actually develop an addiction to them, requiring you to have them for you to fall asleep at all. The best way to augment this possible addiction is to only take them every other day. In fact, your doctor will likely only prescribe a two or three months prescription so that you can take a break for a couple weeks, allowing your body to not come addicted to these medications. This information should allow you to make a positive choice toward getting a good nights sleep by obtaining the right sleeping pills that can help you get to sleep, as well as not become addicted to these medications.

How Meth Changed An Old Friend Into A Zombie

I dated a girl in 1999 and she was one of the sweetest and cutest people I have ever come across. She smoked weed back then and drank a few drinks here and there, but she was really not into any harder drugs. Over the years we lost contact and at that time her life took a stunning direction.

A couple of years ago we reconnected on MySpace and she was a bit different from the way she used to be. I chalked it up to progression in age, but it was something a lot worse. Since we were not close, I did not feel comfortable asking her what was wrong. Fast forward to 2013 for a moment. She left a status telling everyone that she had a stroke and that she was making a pretty good recovery.

I only know a few people who have had a stroke and they were both reasonably older than her, but I figured there was an underlying health issue I knew nothing about. A few weeks ago, everything started to make all of the sense in the world.

I saw her while I was on my way to the bus stop and she looked absolutely terrible. Her hair was very stringy and her skin had marks all over it. While she dressed the same as before, her general demeanor was very different. I talk to a mutual friend about my encounter with her and I was told that she has been using meth. Apparently she has lost her marriage and job as a result of the drugs and her life is spirally downward.

A part of me feels terrible because I hate to see a life wasted and ravaged by drugs, but I don't feel close enough to her to reach out. All I can do is hope and pray that she somehow sees the error of her drug-filled ways and she goes and gets help immediately.

Addiction To Pain Meds Affects Everyone

One of the most easily addicted medications to become addicted to are pain killers.  Pain killers are prescribed everyday to every type of patient.  Whether you are recovering from surgery, have cancer or have an infected tooth, chances are that you have been prescribed some type of pain medication.

In general, most people do fine on pain medication.  Some people, especially those with a history of substance abuse or addiction issues, have a more difficult time with prescription pain killers.  Often times if the person has escaped addiction they will attempt to not take prescription pain killers in fear that they will relapse.

It has gotten to where some urgent care facilities will not prescribe high dose pain killers.  Even if the person has chronic pain issues due to a medical condition, they will be referred back to their regular doctor.  This is to help cut down on any possible misuse.

The sale of prescription pain killers illegally has grown as more people have become addicted.  Many of these addictions began when the person was prescribed the drug legally.  While taking the drug they either developed an addiction or grew tolerant of their original dose.  Often times doctors will attempt to taper a person off of a pain medication to decrease the chance of addiction.

If someone in your family has an addiction to pain killing medication it is important to try to get them help.  It is very likely that the person may not even realize that they are having a problem.  This is especially true if a doctor is still prescribing them pain medication.  Their addiction will affect the entire family, whether it be their attitude or if they start stealing pain medication from other family members.  They may even turn to other illegal sources.

Suitable Treatment Programs For Phencyclidine Addiction

Phencyclidine, which goes by the street names wack, PCP and angel dust is a kind of drug with hallucinogenic effects and can be smoked, inhaled or snorted. Consumption of this drug has numerous effects like nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, increased blood pressure and pulse rate, loss of balance, drooling and dizziness. The long term effects include schizophrenia where one has delusions, paranoia and hallucinations, respiratory failure and coma. Immediate treatment for addiction to PCP is important in order for one to recover from the addiction.

Angel dust is not physically addictive thus, there are no specific drugs that can be administered to an addict to enable them recover. Different forms of therapy are available to enable a person recover from the addiction. The most common kind of therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy. This form of therapy enables the addict replace negative coping skills for various situations with positive coping skills to ensure that they do not turn to using drugs every time they are going through a difficult time.

Interpersonal therapy is the other kind of therapy that an addict may go through. This therapy focuses on a person’s interpersonal relations and social roles. This form of therapy enables patients to be able to handle various existing problems in their lives like disputes, unresolved grief and loss so that they do not turn to addiction.

Supportive programs are important as an addict is able to know that they are not alone and that they can share and seek advice from people who have been in similar situations. Supportive programs such as group counseling sessions offer an opportunity for the addicts to share their problems without being judged. An addict who goes for these sessions gets to interact with people going through similar situations and they will not feel alone.

The treatments for phencyclidine addictions vary depending on the extent of the dosage a person may have been using. More thorough programs are available for people who may be addicted to consumption of huge dosages of the drug. Some people who may have just began consuming the drug can even attend the rehabilitation clinics during the day and leave for home in the evening.

How Methamphetamine Destroys the Body and Mind

Methamphetamine aka Meth aka Crystal Meth is considered a highly addictive drug. Its users testify that they would feel a sudden rush of pleasure and a prolonged period of euphoria as soon as they take Meth. A sudden increase in their focusing faculty, increase in sexual energy and a sudden rush of confidence would prevail for some time. But after the initial stage, the users would require more and more quantities of Methamphetamine, in order to maintain the same levels of energy and pleasure. This is why it is considered an addictive drug.

Amphetamine aka speed is a similar addictive drug as Meth, but the power is a little lesser than Meth. It would increase the speed of all body functions, once taken. Hence it is referred to as "Speed". People take Amphetamines in order to lose weight due to this reason. The Amphetamine would speed up the body's metabolic rate and thereby help to lose a little weight temporarily. But it is not permanent and as soon as you stop taking the drug the weight would return back. Since it is also addictive in nature, you would need to take more and more quantities on a daily basis, in order to maintain the initial weight loss.

Both, Methamphetamine and Amphetamine are not conducive to the human body. It could destroy the body's physical appearance as both these drugs would cause the blood vessels to constrict and restrict the supply of blood to all parts of the body, thereby weakening the internal organs. The sores would take a long time to heal, the skin would lose the elasticity and suppleness, the immune system would weaken and curing diseases would be impossible for people, who have been on Meth or Amphetamine for a long period of time.

Prolonged usage of these drugs would change the brain chemistry of people who are addicted to them. It would destroy the wiring of the brain's pleasure centers making it impossible for these people to feel pleasure again. This is how Meth would destroy an addicted person's body and mind.
